Kindle Q&A

Here are some of the Kindle features that can help you create a safe and enjoyable reading experience for your child.

Concern#1: The Kindle is fragile. I love all the educational tools and eBooks that are available to my child. But I just don’t feel comfortable handing it to my child when it is so easy to break.

Solution: Get a child friendly Kindle case!

There are many companies that have created childproof Kindle cases so that you can be at ease when handing your child this tablet. Below are two that we recommend:

Fisher Price Kid-ToughApptivity Case (for Kindle Fire) CrazyOnDigital Kindle Case

You can find additional cases that have been reviewed for the Kindle Fire here.

Concern #2: I know there are a lot of beneficial tools on the Kindle that my child can use. But how can I prevent my child from using the Kindle for too long? I don’t want it to become another screen that he/she stares at all day.
Solution: Screen time controls.

The Kindle Freetime app available for the Kindle Fire HD is a useful screentime limiting app that parents can download for a monthly membership price (as low as  This apps allow parents to set a time limit on their device before handing it to the children.

Note: Kindle FreeTime is available exclusively in the Apps library for only the Kindle Fire 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HD. It is not available for Kindle Fire 1st Generation.

You can learn more about the app here and get started with Kindle FreeTime Unlimited here.

Concern #3: There is so much content out there that is inappropriate for my child. How can I ensure that my child uses only the features I approve of on the Kindle?

Solution: Parental controls and profiles.

Amazon has created different settings so that parents can restrict what applications and content are available to their child on the Kindle. From emails, web browsers, and content, parents have limit access to almost anything on the Kindle before handing it to their child. Learn more about these parental controls here.

In addition, parents can create a separate profile for their child, under which they can set specific settings that manage the content their child can see. Click here to learn more about creating children’s profiles on the Kindle.

Note: These controls are available only for the Kindle Fire 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HD. They are not available for Kindle Fire 1st Generation.

Concern #4: I have a Kindle and am eager to use the eBooks and other tools with my child. But there is just so much stuff available! Where do I start looking?
Solution: Start exploring the Amazon store. You’ll find that Amazon, like most online stores now, has conveniently organized the content it offers into handy little categories (age, character, children’s books, picture and chapter, and more).

You can visit the Children’s section on Amazon here.

We hope these controls will be useful to you and help you create a safer and more enjoyable reading experience for your child.

With all these new stuff invented, parents now will not be afraid to hand their kids a tablet. I'm glad that this one is made because my little son really wants to use my tablet.
